I Shall Not Live In Vain

April 8, 2013 by DSUpshaw

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
Emily Dickinson

This has always been my favorite poem.  I read it in high school and have loved Emily Dickinson since.

It is a very simple message, if you do one good thing for someone your life has meaning.  You don’t have to be a war hero, find a cure for cancer or be elected president.  You just have to be a good decent person.

We should never be quick to judge someone or to idolize them.  Every life has value.
